Those experiencing meditation-related distress may be in need of immediate help if:

  • they are in extreme distress, are acting very out of character

  • they are risk to themselves: suicidal, or self-harming, making risky decisions (like driving);

  • delusional, psychotic; cognitively or functionally impaired

  • they are risk to others: violent, delusional, disruptive, making risky decisions (like driving)

  • available support is not sufficient to maintain safety of meditator or others

Alternative inpatient  and residential options

  • Gould Farm (Monterey, MA): a residential healing community located on a 700-acre working farm in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts. Serves adults, ages 18 and older with diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, and related mental health challenges.

  • Inner Fire ( Brookline, VT): A small residential community for “Proactive Healing To Recover From Debilitation and Traumatic Life Challenges”

  • Soteria House (Burlington VT): A small, person-centered, therapeutic community residence for the prevention of hospitalization for individuals experiencing psychosis.
